Film Festival
Held annually in February in
Tampa, Florida. Provides an opportunity for those in the
Tampa Bay area to better understand and enjoy diverse
cultures from around the world.
For the savvy movie lover
there is nothing better than a great film festival.
There are regional film festivals, international
festivals, large, small, whatever the film buff desires
to see.
The Sundance Film Festival is one of the most famous and
prestigious. It takes place in Park City, Utah in
January. This premiere festival draws thousands of
viewers and hundreds of entries every year. The films
range from the very short to full length feature films.
A various amount of competition takes place and the
winners are considered very strong for the commercial
marketplace come wide release.
There is also the Cannes Film Festival that takes place
in Paris. This is the European film festival that people
from all around the world go to visit. Cannes started in
1946 and soon established itself as a top of the line
festival. It occurs in early summer, usually in May.
So if Sundance and Cannes are the cream of the crop,
what are some of the other smaller film festivals? The
New York International Independent Film and Video
Festival is fast becoming a fan favorite. This is the
largest film festival that shows film, video and
screenplays in both New York and Los Angeles.
Another fun festival was created by a famous film
critic. The Roger Ebert’s Overlooked Film Festival
happens in Champaign, Illinois and is open to the
public. This festival looks at films that are either
done in a different format from the norm (mostly those
in 70 mm) or films that were overlooked by the general
public. Documentaries are discussed and considered very
important. All films are chosen by Roger Ebert.
A genre film festival happens in New York City. It is
called Exposure: Future of Film Festival. This exciting
festival focuses on cutting edge science fiction movies
that push the boundaries of what the genre is all about.
It is open to the public and has a competition taking
place to determine which film reigns supreme.
Los Angeles is the undisputed king of movie magic. It is
not surprising many film festivals take place there. The
Hungarian Film Festival of Los Angeles is shown in
Beverly Hills, California. Hungarian film makers are
honored for their work in feature films, animation,
documentaries and student films.
Another Los Angeles festival is the Annual Program
Without Frontiers in West Hollywood, California. Shirt
films are highlighted here and also documentaries and
narrative films. This festival has a competition and
occurs in January.
Animation has recently received a revival in Tinsel
Town. With their box office power and wide ranging
appeal, animated movies are becoming big business. The
Chicago film festival called Cineme Chicago
International Animation Film Festival showcases the
talent that is responsible for this upwardly moving
class of films. This is the largest one hundred percent
animated film festival in North America.
